Juneteenth is the annual federal holiday on June 19, 1865 that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans: the exact day it was announced in the state of Texas, U.S. that enslaved African Americans were free. As a global B Corp Data Protection Office, HewardMills highlighted this year’s Juneteenth celebration.  As part of our 5th year anniversary celebration, we observed the significance of Juneteenth by reminiscing on our journey to Ghana in May to mark our incredible journey throughout the years to realise our vision: To be an organisation that continually strives for excellence, focusing on disintegration of racial bias and discrimination within the data protection and privacy space.

In June 2021, Juneteenth moved from just a state holiday in Texas to an official federal holiday. Juneteenth National Independence Day has evolved into a global celebration recognising the heritage of the Black Experience. Juneteenth is a historical landmark that is celebrated and observed for the significance it holds for many who trace their ancestry to Africa, particularly, those who were victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. As such, there has been a growing movement by organisations to participate in the worldwide move to end slavery and discrimination of all people.

We will continue to work towards facilitating a workplace culture that cultivates and celebrates the heritage, culture, and advancements of all people in the data protection industry.

In honour of Juneteenth, HewardMills reiterated the importance of our dedication as an organisation focused on disintegrating bias and discrimination.
